We sure spend a lot of time babying our seedlings. We start them indoors where they’re safe from the elements. We plant them in the best soil we can find. We use a warming pad underneath to help germination and growth, and they bask under grow lights all day long. But guess what? Your tomato seedlings need a good […]
MAYBE YOU’RE WONDERING this right about now: Why do vegetable seedlings sometimes stretch and grow spindly, and how can you prevent it? All the cited research has been done in the light- and climate-controlled conditions of a lab, or commercial greenhouse—not the less-formal home seed-starting environment. The classic example of happy companion plants is the legendary “Three Sisters”—corn, beans, and either pumpkins or squash. In this technique, known as companion planting, the three crops are planted close together. The three crops benefit from each other. The tomato transplanting party took place on March 16, 2013. Our hardworking members transplanted a mind-blowing 2,250 tomato seedlings of 49 different varieties into 3-inch pots for a total of 90 flats. Way to go COGC!
We finished all the planting a full week ahead of schedule! Also at this Saturday’s planting party our Veggie Captains will hand out packets of seeds and flats filled with soil for the direct seeding. We ask that ALL our members take part with […]
Kudos to everyone who worked so hard last Saturday! Thanks to an absolutely outstanding effort by the crackerjack crew of seeders and transplanters who planted all the tomatoes and transplanted the remaining peppers, eggplants, and herbs. Because of this we won’t need to hold another planting party until March 16. On that day we’ll be handing out […]

In addition, he is the Garden Master for The Learning Garden, a community and school garden located on the campus of Venice High School. The Learning Garden was launched in March of 2001. Since then it has quickly […]
